A parcel of money containing Rs.16,951, belonging to a 70-year-old female beggar was today confiscated by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

Magistrate Thilina Gamage directed that the money be confiscated when the beggar woman had failed to claim the Rs.16,951 within a period of six months after her arrest on charges of begging.

She was fined Rs.10 and released but had failed to lay claim to the money.

The elderly woman was arrested by the Fort Police when begging near the Fort railway station on January 16 this year.

The Fort police said the woman had committed an offence under section 3(1) of the Vagrants Ordinance. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
