The maintenance of the beggars’ camp in Hambantota costs the government Rs.3 Million a month, the Southern Provincial Council’s (SPC) Social Services Department said

590 beggars were taken into custody from the Colombo area and brought to the camp but only 520 remain due to some beggars escaping from the facility, Shriya Danthanarayana, Directress of the Social Services Department of the SPC told Daily Mirror online.

We have been compelled to put in a lot of effort to keep the beggars inside the camp, Danthanarayana said. (Daily Mirror online)
