Some 180 people were seriously injured when a hoard of bees attacked them at a temple in Glanorwatte, Haputhale this evening, the Assistant Government Agent of Haputhale, Darmasiri Piyasena told Daily Mirror.

Piyasena said, “The injured were all rushed to the Haputhale Hospital, and a number of them received the necessary treatment and were later released whilst the rest are still being treated,” adding that two individuals who were seriously injured were transferred to the Diyathalawa Hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the bees had attacked the devotees 10 minutes after the pooja began at the temple. Piyasena explained, “Incidentally the same incident had taken place last year, at the same venue and event which was conducted at a similar time period, injuring a similar number of people.”

He said that the people in the area were convinced that ‘the Gods’ were upset and that this was the cause for the incident.
