Be alert for strong winds

The Meteorology Department said today more strong winds could be expected in the country during next few days. Two people were injured when strong winds lashed Gampaha and Bandaragama during the weekend.

Six houses were destroyed and 213 badly damaged.

A Met Department spokesman said the strong winds could be accompanied by thunder showers especially in the afternoons and in the evenings. People have been asked to take precautions against the dangers resulting from lightning. 

Many parts of the country received scattered showers today with Ampara having the highest rainfall of 72.2 mm. Hiniduma in the Galle District received 500 mm of rain, Aranayake a rainfall of 48.4 mm and Nuwara Eliya 33 mm.

Hydro catchment areas also received a few showers with a rainfall of 22 mm recorded from Kotmale and 20 mm from Lakshapana area. (YP)
