The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has unanimously adopted a resolution against the government’s decision to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to inquire into the conduct of retired Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva.

BASL Secretary Mahinda Lokuge said the BASL passed the resolution at a Bar Council Meeting convened on Saturday by BASL President Shibly Aziz PC.

At the outset of the meeting, President’s Counsel Tirantha Walaliyadda proposed the resolution to be considered in the meeting while Attorney Nimal Weerakkody seconded it.

Adopting the resolution, the BASL said the proposal to appoint or the appointment of a PSC to inquire into the conduct of the tenure of office of a retired Supreme Court judge was in a context where the country’s constitution provided for such an inquiry only in respect of a sitting judge in terms of the article 107 of the constitution.
