The Bar Association of Sri Lanka yesterday condemned the abduction of a prisoner in Hulftsdorp. Speaking to the Daily Mirror, the President of the Bar Association Shibly Azeez said that the association condemns the abduction in the strongest possible terms.

“We call for an immediate investigation into the incident and we urge the P\police to immediately report to court what took place” he said.

In a statement issued to the media the Bar Association demanded that the culture of abduction be stopped immediately.

“The culture of impunity inherent in these abductions should be forthwith stopped by the law enforcement authorities, as it reflects a serious erosion of law and order in the country,” the statement said.

Members of the family of the abducted prisoner and a group of lawyers staged a protest against the abduction in front of the court complex yesterday. Azeez denied the involvement of the bar Association in the protest.

“The Association was not part of the protest. They were a separate group of lawyers. We however demand and end to this abducting culture” he said (Hafeel Farisz)
