The Bandarawela Police Chief Inspector was transferred with immediate effect on charges of having failed to take steps to avoid a clash which took place inside the police station last Saturday between two rival UPFA groups.

The incident took place when the two rival groups came to lodge complaints against each other following a clash while campaigning at the elections to the Uva Provincial Council.

However an argument had led to an exchange of blows inside the police station but the senior police officer had failed to take appropriate action to prevent such a confrontation and to control the situation.

CI S.J Karunasena was transferred to the Police Field Force Headquarters yesterday.

Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana said disciplinary action would be taken against him and already an investigation had begun. “The transfer was based on charges of not having prevented the clash and for negligence of duty,” SSP Rohana said. (Supun Dias)
