UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon may rethink moves to appoint a panel of experts to advise him on Sri Lanka following stiff opposition expressed by the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) this week, UN sources told Daily Mirror online.
Speaking to Daily Mirror online on the condition of anonymity UN sources said that “informally” they have heard that the UN Secretary General’s office has been shaken by the vehemence of the response by NAM and so there might be a rethink.
The Non Aligned Movement (NAM) has last week expressed concerns over moves by UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon to appoint a panel of experts to advice on accountability issues on Sri Lanka.
The Chair of the NAM Coordinating Bureau in New York, in a letter to the UN Chief, has said that the appointment comes without taking into consideration the domestic situation in Sri Lanka and without consulting the government of Sri Lanka.
Also earlier last week Ambassador Palitha Kohona, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations told NAM that the decision by the UN Chief had been taken contrary to the wishes of the Sri Lankan Government and without any proper consultation. (Daily Mirror online)
