Balasuriya vows to combat drugs and crime

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya who assumed duties today as the new Law and Order Ministry Secretary vowed to combat drugs and organised crime in the country.


“We have identified that these factors are a main obstacle that prevents people from carry out their day to activities. We will take steps to arrest drug traffickers and criminals who are involved in these activities,” he said.


Mr. Balasuriya said that in the absence of the proper interaction among the police, the people and the state the police alone would not be able to provide a better service.


“We will implement new plans to control the traffic flow and plans are underway to introduce new technology for the police emergency service,” he said and added that he was planning to do something on his own at the end of his term in the diplomatic service.(Darshana Sanjeewa and Supun Dias)
