Severe weather advisory valid for the next 24 hours was issued by the Met Department at 5.00 p.m. today. It said heavy rains accompanied by strong winds could be expected in the South-Western parts of the country.

The department advised Naval and fishing communities to be vigilant as deep and shallow seas off the coastal areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo and Galle would be rough and dangerous with strong southwesterly winds increasing up to 70 kilometres an hour.

It said showers would occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern Provinces and in the Puttalam and Kurunegala districts while monsoonal winds would strengthen over the island especially along the western slopes of the central hills.
