Azath Salley arrested

Former Colombo Deputy Mayor Azath Salley was arrested by the CID yesterday morning while he was at his residence in Kolonnawa.
The arrest was made after the police received several complaints about his anti-government activities and statements.

The CID declined to comment about the allegations. Mr. Sally was a former Colombo Deputy Mayor and the leader of the Muslim Tamil National Alliance (MTNA).

Sometime ago he had been stopped from leaving the country after he was asked to appear in courts to answer charges that he had allegedly cheated a Health Ministry labourer of Rs.600,000.

The victim had lodged a complaint at the Colombo Crime Division (CCD). More than five similar cases are said to be pending against him. (YP, SD)
