The army says it has yet to get instructions from the relevant authorities on releasing detained General Sarath Fonseka to attend the new parliament when it reconvenes later this month after he won a seat from Colombo at the General Elections.

When asked under what conditions the General will be released to attend Parliament on April 22 and if they had got instructions to that effect, Army spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasinghe said they had not got any instructions as yet.

Under the parliamentary privileges General Fonseka, on being officially named as a Member of Parliament (MP), has the right to attend parliament sittings. The Elections Commissioner is expected to name the 225 members elected to parliament at the recent General Elections after the re-poll scheduled for Kumburupitiya in Trincomalee and Nawalapitiya on 20 April.
