Video: Army to send another batch to Haiti

Sri Lanka would send another Peace Keeping Regiment to Haiti in November under a United Nations Peace Keeping Programme, Media Director of the Sri Lanka Army Jayanath Jayaweera said today.


He said the regiment will comprise of 54 Army officers and 708 other rankers.


Along with them would go two Navy officers and 42 other rankers and two Air Force officers and 42 other rankers. This is the 20th peace keeping mission of the SL.


“The officials will leave for Haiti on November 13 and 18 following the passing out ceremony that will be held in the Wijeyaba Infantry Regiment Headquarters in Kurunegala with the patronage of Major General Jagath Dias,” he said.


Jayaweera said the officers were selected on the seniority of their service from the five infantry regiments of the Army, Navy and the Air Force.
The first Sri Lankan peace keeping regiment was sent to Congo in 1962. (Lahiru Pothmulla and Sanath Desmond)
