Army officer and two soldiers suspended

Sri Lanka Army has suspended the services of an army officer and two other soldiers who were arrested for alleged involvement in a robbery of cash and jewellery from a shop in Padukka.

The army headquarters said that the suspects including a Lieutenant, all three disable Army personnel, alleged to have robbed cash and jewellery, worth over Rs 1 million, were working in an Army welfare project before arrests were made by Special Investigations Unit of the Mirihana Police.

Police after producing them to the Gangodawila Magistrate have obtained a detention order for three of them for a period of 72 hours.

In the meantime, Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police has commenced a parallel investigation into the incident and assured its cooperation to the Police for further action.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, alert to the information, directed the authorities to  immediately suspend their services, pending further disciplinary actions on the recommendations of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police and Directorate of Legal Services.
