An Army Major was admitted to the National Hospital after being allegedly assaulted by a group led by controversial minister Mervyn Silva's son Malaka at a five star hotel in Colombo last night, according to a complaint made to the police.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said that a corporal who was with the major at the time of the incident had also been injured during the clash.

According to the complaint lodged with the police, the incident had occurred when Malaka Silva asked the major for a cigarette. The officer had given him a cigarette. Then he had asked for a lighter.

The major had said he did not have a lighter and the other party had then started a brawl. The incident had occurred between 2.30 am and 3.00 am.

A complaint had been lodged with the Slave Island Police by the aggrieved party. The police had then sent a team to the Colombo National Hospital to record a statement from the major and he had charged that his official pistol had been taken away by the group.
