Archeological sites desecrated

More than 50 sites of archeological importance in the Mullativu district have been desecrated by the LTTE and used as bunkers and fortifications, JHU parliamentarian the venerable Ellawala Medhananda thero told Daily mirror online.  

He added that a total of 1633 sites have been desecrated in the Anuradapura, Vauniya and Mullativu districts and that they should be preserved from further damage.

Ellawala Medhananda thero requested the President to take steps to hand over the control of these archeological sites to the Department of Archaeology for preservation. 

Monuments like moon stones, and ancient fortresses belonging to 11th century have been severely affected, Ellawala Medhananda thero said. (Daily Mirror online)
