Reports that Deputy Minister of External Affairs Neomal Perera apologized for on behalf of Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris’s claim, that Nepal requested Sri Lankan assistance in their internal affairs is a fictitious tale, Ministry of External Affairs said.

“The Deputy Minister made a courtesy call on Prime Minister Madhav Kumar in Katmandu, he made no apology for a statement made by Prof. Peiris. These are malicious and fabricated stories circulated in the media with no proper source,” Director General of Public Communications and Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs Bandula Jayasekara said.

A Sri Lankan news site claimed on Wednesday that during Deputy Minister Perera’s visit to Katmandu he had apologized on behalf of his senior to the Nepalese Government.

Minister Peiris has stated repeatedly that during his discussions with Nepalese President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav in Beijing, the President has requested President Mahinda Rajapaksa to take up the role of peace negotiator in Nepal. However the Nepalese Government denied any such request. (Dianne Silva)
