Angulana trial date set

The trial at bar Judges Ms. Deepali Wijesundera W.M.P.B. Warawewa and Ms. Kumudini Wickramasinghe today fixed the hearing of the Angulana Police station murder trial for August 19.

At the outset of the hearing Counsel Thirantha Walaliyadda submitted that the prosecution had listed some entries from the log books of the Angulana Police Station as documents in the case.

He said that the defense is entitled to have the copies of the those documents and to order the prosecution to issue them to the defense.

He also said that he will object for the listing of the photographes taken by a digital camera as their copies were not submitted to the defense 45 days before trial. Following the submissions of the counsel the Judges fixed further hearing for August 19.

The former OIC of Angulana Police  T.G Newton and three other police officers Indrawansa Kumarasiri,  Nihal Dhammika Jayaratna and Janapriya  Senaratne were accused of murdering two youths, Dinesh Tharanga and Dhanushka Madusinghe at the Angulana Police Station consequent  to an incident  in which the youths had allegedly sexually harassed a woman in the area.

The  youths arrested by the Angulana Police were later  found shot and killed in the vicinity of Angulana. The OIC and  the three police officers were charged for committing the killing and being presently fixed to try at the Colombo High Court as a trial at bar case.

President Counsel Anil Silva with Chandika Pieris, President Counsel Tirantha Walaliyadda with Jagath Abeynayake, Upul Ruwanpura and Nipuna Wimalasekera instructed by Malin Rajapakse and  Counsel Gamini Alwis with Ashan Indika defended the accused.
