​Amnesty period for army deserters further extended

The General Amnesty period offered to army absentees enabling them to receive their discharge from the army, that scheduled to end tomorrow (16), has been extended until April 25, the Army said.

Military Spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said that following several requests, the Army Commander on the instruction of President Maithripala Sirisena and the Defence Ministry Secretary, the army has extended the period by ten more days.

He also said that during the general amnesty that commenced on April 02, more than 12000 absentees have reported themselves to their respective regimental centers so far.

He requested other army absentees to report to relevant authorities to expedite their legal discharge.
