The Epidemiology Unit had warned that there was a risk of the AH1N1 virus re-emerging in Sri Lanka as the virus is currently spreading in India and that precautionary steps have been taken against it.

Senior Epidemiologist of the Health Ministry, Dr. Sudath Peiris told Daily Mirror online that the previous four hundred thousand vaccine stocks for the AH1N1 virus which was requested from the World Health Organization (WHO) has been distributed to island wide hospitals.

As a precautionary measure we have requested for another one million vaccines from the WHO to face any AH1N1 virus out brakes in the country. Steps have also been taken to provide the vaccines for free at the hospital that they have been distributed, Dr. Peiris said

Dr. Peiris added that the steps were taken as precautionary measure because there was a high likelihood of the virus spreading to Sri Lanka from a neighboring country such as India.  (Daily Mirror online)
