The police will take action against those contesting the Local Government elections if they use illegal election propaganda such as posters and hoardings during the election process, police spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said.

He said that some candidates have already begun putting up posters in many districts. “The police have begun removing the posters and will take action against those persons for such acts according to the law when necessary,” SP Jayakody said. He said however that there isn’t sufficient labor to remove the posters but that the police were doing what they can.

Meanwhile the election monitor, Peoples Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said that more than 15,000 candidates are expected to participate in the local government elections in the country. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
