Two killed, 13 injured in road accident

One person was killed and six others were injured when a van skidded off the road and crashed into the nearby bridge at Ulapane in Gampola this morning, police said.

They said the van belonging to the Hatton Zonal Education Centre was travelling from Nawalapitiya to Gampola.

The injured were admitted to Gampola and Nawalapitiya hospitals.

Two of the injured are in a critical condition at the Gampola hospital.

Meanwhile one person was killed and seven others were injured in a collision between a lorry and a bus opposite the Galewela Health Centre.

Police said according to eyewitnesses the lorry had overtaken another vehicle before colliding with the bus that was stopped by the roadside to take in passengers.

The bus driver and several passengers who were at the bus halt were among those injured. The lorry driver was arrested by Galewela police pending further investigations. (Mohamed Buhardeen)
