An illegal abortion centre was raided in Negombo and three persons running the centre were arrested, the police said.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that the centre was raided after a search warrant was granted from the Negombo Magistrate. The raid took place last night in Weligampitiya and the police also arrested two women who had come for treatment at the time.

The two women were admitted to the Ragama General Hospital for further treatment, SP Rohana said. The Ja-ela police are conducting further investigations into the incident.

Hundreds of abortions take place daily in Sri Lanka almost equal to the number getting added to the population in a single day. Authorities have taken a number of steps to minimise such illegal abortion centres.

The incidents of abortions have declined in recent years as access to family planning education services have increased. (Supun Dias)
