The Government should move towards scrapping the Executive Presidency without holding a Presidential Election, the United National Party (UNP) said today.

UNP Parliamentarian Joseph Michael Perera told a media briefing that the government should peruse a course of action to scrap the Executive Presidency given the statement made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday that he was ready to scrap the Presidency if those who called for the division of the country gave up Eelam demand.

“Why hold a Presidential Election if the government was ready to scrap the Executive Presidency?” he questioned.

Mr. Perera said the UNP had already embarked on an action to have a dialogue with other opposition parties such as the JVP, Democratic Party and also government allies to establish a common course of action to reform the Constitution. (Yohan Perera & Sanath Desmond)
