Underscoring the fact that the 2014 budget had failed to encourage the export industry, which is vital for Sri Lanka’s development, the United National Party (UNP) said today it was basically a casino-friendly, anti-people budget.

“Only one per cent of the people with a casino culture have benefited from the budget whereas the others have been neglected by the Government. Had the government considered the voices of average citizens before drafting the budget, it would have heaped more taxes on casinos. A 99 per cent of the people in Sri Lanka have nothing to expect from this budget,” UNP MP and well-known economist Harsha de Silva told a news conference.

However he praised government’s attempt at reducing the gap between the income and expenditure in the budget. (Lahiru Pothmulla & Shihara Maduwage)
