We are not prepared to allow the 'Pohottuwa' to dominate the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) as anticipated by the members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP), SLFP National Organiser and MP, Duminda Dissanayake said.

He said this during a meeting of SLFP Local Government (LG) members at Anuradhapura on Thursday to discuss the future political activities of the party and its May Day preparations.

The MP confirmed that the SLFP would nominate President Maithripala Sirisena as the party's presidential candidate.

He said the SLFP was always in favour of political alliances and that it had always won elections after contesting together with other parties.

“The larger the alliance the greater our victory has been. That’s why we had discussions with the SLPP. However, we won't allow them to suppress or dominate our party. We can’t forget our party members. They are the ones who stood by us and the President during hard times. Regardless of the alliance we enter into, we will maintain our identity,”the MP said.

He said SLPP Chairman G. L. Peiris has said they were opposed to the President seeking a Supreme Court ruling on the duration of his tenure.

“As the SLFP, we always back an SLFP president and will always aspire to protect our members. We will only take measures which will strengthen our party and its members,” the MP said. (Dayarathna Ambogama)
