UPFA MP Faizer Mustapha today said all Muslim MPs have unanimously decided to amend the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) and accordingly, a Cabinet paper would be presented to amend it soon.

The MP said they expect to present the Cabinet paper through the Muslim Religious Affairs Minister to amend the MMDA.

“A lengthy discussion has been taking place in the country to amend the MMDA. The unanimous decision of all the Muslims MPs to amend this was long overdue and is a victory. We hope it can be amended soon since all MPs are on board,” he said addressing a news briefing.

He also said there are other personal laws in the country and that requests have been made to amend these as well.

“The MMDA, Kandyan Law and laws based on Hindu religion are some personal laws in the country. Requests have been made to add some amendments to these as well. The Constitution and the Penal Code apply to all citizens. However, when we look at the history, the Constitution has given personal law rights based on ethnicity and religions,” he said.

He said the request to amend the MMDA came within the Muslim community. “They accept that it should be amended. It is a need of the Muslim community. We are committed to do this,” he said.
