Claiming that it was absurd waiting anymore for the President’s resignation, as he had fled the country disregarding his responsibility, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna said today Parliament had a right to elect a new President as per the Constitution.

JVP MP Vijitha Herath told a news conference that if the President had fled the country without officially tendering his resignation, it could be presumed as vacating the post.

He said there was a similar incident where Tunisian President Ben Ali fled the country without announcing his official resignation.

MP Herath said in terms of the provisions of the Article 38(2) of the Constitution, the Speaker and the Chief Justice can take a decision to elect a new President through Parliament.

He said both the President and the Prime Minister should step down to stabilise and bring back the country to normalcy.(Ajith Siriwardana)
