The wholesale and retail prices of several varieties of commonly used vegetables and fish has increased considerably because of the low level of supply from the areas concerned, Economic Centres said.
They said the disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions have resulted in the rise in wholesale and retail prices.
The Central Bank said the wholesale and retail prices of Beans, Carrots, Tomatoes, Big Onions and Dried Chillies have increased while wholesale and retail prices of Kelawalla, Thalapath, Balaya, Salaya are on the rise as well.
Retail price of Red Onions has not increased while retail price of Green Chillie has increased only in the Dambulla Economic Centre.
The retail prices of a kg of Beans, Carrots, Tomato, Big Onions and Dried Chilli are Rs. 170, Rs. 270, Rs. 140, Rs. 180 and Rs.450 respectively while the retail prices of 1kg of vegetables mentioned above were recorded at Rs. 243, Rs.158, Rs.115, Rs.148 and Rs. 420 on last Friday.
Meanwhile, prices of fish in all economic centers remained high.
Fish like Kelawalla, Thalapath, Balaya and Salaya are on the rise and the retail prices of 1kg are recorded as Rs.950, Rs.1,050, Rs.480 and Rs.220 respectively.
“Price of most fish varieties have increased at Peliyagoda and Narahenpita markets compared to last Friday while some fish varieties were not available in Negombo market owing to low fishing activities resulted by unfavourable weather condition, the Central Bank said.
Vendors at Dambulla, Nuwara Eliya, Pettah and Narahenpita Economic Centres said the substantial decrease in the supply of vegetables had compelled them to increase prices. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
