Underworld figure ’Makandure Madush’ shot dead

Notorious underworld drug kingpin Samarasinghe Arachchige Madush Lakshitha alias Makandure Madush was shot dead in a crossfire between police and other suspected underworld figures at Maligawatte Housing Complex, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

He said the officers of the Colombo Crimes Division had taken Madush to an apartment at the housing complex to recover a stock of hidden heroin.

DIG Rohana said that a group of unidentified men, suspected to be underworld figures had reportedly opened fire at the police.

Madush’ has been shot dead in a crossfire between police and the underworld figures near the housing complex.

DIG Rohana said that two Police Constables attached to the CCD were also injured in the shootout.

Police have recovered 22 kilograms of heroin, 02 pistols and a motorcycle at the location.

Makandure Madush who was under the custody of the CID was transferred to the custody of the CCD for further investigations on last Friday (16).

Madush who was arrested at a drug-fuelled party in Dubai on February 5, 2019, was deported to Sri Lanka on May 5 last year.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said that a special police team headed by the OIC of the Maligawatta Police had been appointed to investigate into the death of Makandure Madush.

DIG Rohana said the CCD also investigating over the motorcycle which was found in the scene.

The wife of deceased Madush has identified the dead body and that the body would be released to the Madush's family after the magisterial and autopsy inquiries, he said.
