The main purpose of US Secretary Mike Pompeo, who will be visiting Sri Lanka shortly, was to prepare legal background for the US army to handle main spots in Sri Lanka at any time without being subject them to the Sri Lankan law, National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa said yesterday.

He told news briefing that there was another attempt with this arrival to sign the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) which is an agreement between a host country and a foreign nation stationing military forces in that country and to sign Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA).

Nevertheless, he said the USA was attempting to make Sri Lanka their next military base.

Meanwhile, he said an office of the United States (US) Bar Association was going to be set up in Colombo, “Since the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has shown its dissent over the setting up of such an office, the process has been temporarily halted,” he said.

“It is questionable as to why the Government has allowed setting up an office of US Bar Association in Sri Lanka. There is no office of any country’s Bar Association in Sri Lanka.

He said the hidden motive of this is to protect and prove the innocence of Americans who commit criminal activities in Sri Lanka. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
