United National party (UNP) is to nominate Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to Parliament to fill the vacancy created by Late Minister M.K.A.D.S Gunawardane, UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim said yesterday.

Minister Hashim told Daily Mirror that Field Marshal Fonseka has been nominated though final decision has not been named yet. He said the final decision will be made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the party leader.

Mr. Hasim however said it is almost certain that the party will give its approval.

Asked whether the Democratic Party led by Field Marshal Fonseka will ally with the UNP, Mr Hasim said his party has had talks with several parties including the Democratic Party and had requested those parties to ally with the UNP and such an alliance may take place in the future.

Field Marshal Fonseka is expected to be sworn in as an MP on February 9.(Yohan Perera)
