UNP member, Professor Chandima Wijegunawardana who was questioned by the CID today allegedly over her recent remarks on the X-Press Pearl disaster said the only thing she had stressed was for a probe by INTERPOL on the X-Press Pearl fire.

Professor Wijegunawardana told Daily Mirror that she had only urged the government to seek the assistance of INTERPOL for a probe. “I explained to them that the objective of my recent press conference was to urge the government to seek INTERPOL assistance for a proper probe,” she said.

“I have handed over all documents as proof of my arguments with regard to X-Press Pearl to CID," she added.

Professor Wijegunawardene earlier said in the press conference that the INTERPOL had informed Pakistan, Bangladesh and India about the ship and  why was it that Sri Lanka was not informed. She said the vessel had been carrying more than 15,000 barrels and containers comprising mercury and oil mixed with other chemicals. (Yohan Perera)
