UNP yesterday urged the government to go for a complete lockdown for a specific period and control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardene who made a special statement said the government should go for a lockdown for at least two weeks and try to control the ongoing pandemic.

“Government should go for an island-wide lock down and control the spread of COVID-19. Also, efforts should be made to get the essential medical equipment such as ICU beds and PCR machines,” Mr. Abeywardene said.

“It is important to make the right decision at the right time,” he stressed.

Mr. Abeywardene blamed the government for not taking adequate steps to avoid a third wave of COVID-19 pandemic. “The health authorities failed to issue necessary heath guidelines for the Sinhala New Year festive period and allowed movement from one area to another. Also, a false assurance was given to people that the pandemic has been controlled. These shortcomings led to a third wave of the pandemic,” he said. (Yohan Perera)
