UNF leaders who met yesterday have decided to expedite the compiling of the Constitution of the new alliance - the National Democratic Front (NDF), which is slated to form in order to contest the presidential election.

Informed sources told the Daily Mirror that UNF leaders have made this decision following Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa getting into an agreement to form the alliance as soon as possible.

UNF leaders had met yesterday to discuss the proposed alliance. Sources said they discussed the amendments proposed by UNP Chairman Kabir Hashim to its constitution.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe who addressed a gathering organised by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium later during the day yesterday, said it was essential to move away from traditional politics.

He said the new alliance should go with modern ideas. “We should not change the pillow as a remedy for a headache. Parties should move away from traditional politics and form a broad alliance,” he said.

Prime Minister re-assured that the new alliance will be formed before the end of this month. (Yohan Perera)
