Two including UAE deportee detained by TID for promoting extremism

Two suspects including a 44-year old man from Mawanella who was deported from UAE have been taken into the custody of Terrorism Investigation Division for promoting extremism, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

He said the 44-year old raised funds in the UAE to nurture extremism. He was deported to Sri Lanka on December 5 last year. 

The TID also confiscated a laptop  from the suspect's possession.

DIG Rohana said investigations disclosed that the suspect was promoting radicalism in Sri Lanka.

The TID to detain the suspect under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Meanwhile, the TID took another 27-year old suspect into their custody from the Batticaloa Police who was arrested over various offences.

The Police Spokesman said the suspect, a resident of Kaththankudy was also indulged in radical activities and had treated Mohammed Rilvan, brother of Easter Sunday suicide attack linchpin Zahran Hashim.

The suspect was handed over to the TID under PTA regularities through a motion filed in the court.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
