A 27-year-old youth and a 45-year-old woman were arrested with heroin worth Rs.1 million during a raid at the Wellampitiya Police area last night by the Organised Crime Preventive Division of Colombo.
The suspects were arrested in their house at Ransura Mawatha in Wennawatta, Wellampitiya yesterday following information received to the Crime Preventive Division.
“During the raid, 100 grammes and 983 milligrams of heroin were found. Following the questioning of the 27-year-old suspect, the woman who is his mother-in-law was arrested,” police said.
Further investigations revealed that an inmate in the Welikada Prison who was imprisoned over several drug offences had provided the illegal drugs to the suspects via another person.
The suspects were produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate today and the Magistrate allowed the Organised Crime Preventive Division to detain and question the suspects.
The raid was carried out by Crime Preventive Division Director SSP Athulathmudali, ASP Ajantha Rodrigo, OIC Chaminda Welagedara and IP Rajitha Warnapriya following the instructions of the Crime and Organised Crime Division Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Priyantha Jayakody.
