Two arrested while attempting to smuggle in 1.45 kilos of Ice

Two suspects were arrested by the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting to smuggle in 1.45 kilos of methamphetamine (Ice) yesterday, police said.

The PNB officers at the BIA initially arrested one suspect, a resident of Katugastota, when he attempted to smuggle in methamphetamine from Chennai to the country.

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Maharoof Mohammed Waseem.

The second suspect, 24-year-old Mohammed Thameer who is a resident of Matale, was arrested when he arrived at the BIA to pick up the first suspect.

He was arrested on charges of aiding and abetting the smuggling. The police also seized a van.

The suspects were produced in the Negombo Magistrate's Court and were ordered to be detained for seven days for questioning.

Meanwhile, sources said that following the questioning of the suspects, the police were able to reveal information about the main suspect involved in the smuggling.

It was reported that the main suspect is a businessman who is a resident of Matale.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
