Two arrested for smuggling 5.5kg of gold

Two suspects were arrested by the Navy and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard when they attempted to smuggle 5.5kg of gold into the country via sea routes in the seas off Karainagar.

The Navy said the suspect were arrested during a special search operation carried out in Northern seas.

“Upon detection of a suspicious dinghy at sea, naval personnel recovered about 05kg and 500g of gold in four parcels aboard and held two suspects involved in the smuggling racket,” the Navy said.

The suspects aged 30 and 32 years of age together with seized consignment of gold were handed over to the Jaffna Customs Office for onward investigation.
