Considering the daily rise in road accidents in the country, the Transport Ministry has issued instructions to all drivers to focus on the safety of the general public during the festive season.

The instructions were issued following a discussion held this morning at the Ministry with the National Council for Road Safety.

The instructions dictate safe driving and include the condition of the vehicles as well.

Accordingly, reckless driving and driving at high speeds, careless or negligent turn, driving under the influence of alcohol, using cellular phones while driving, drowsy driving/driving in the exhausted physical condition and not fastening seat belts are mentioned in the instructions.

Meanwhile, the instructions clearly mention the conditions of vehicles such as unroadworthy vehicles, worn out tyres, malfunctioning of brake system and other complications that could cause instantaneous road mishaps. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
