The train service which scheduled to resume from tomorrow (21) has been cancelled until further notice, Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters' Union (SLSMU) Secretary Kasun Chamara said.

He said that although the operational staff of the railway station had been summoned to resume the operation of trains, had been cancelled due to the notice issued by the Railway Department yesterday (19) morning.

He said that although the schedule for the resumption of the train was prepared and the necessary arrangements have been made, the train would not run until a fresh announcement is made.

Chamara further said that although various parties have expressed ambiguity that the decision was taken due to a fuel crisis, his association could not give a definite answer to this. As an association the reason for taking this decision will be further investigated.

"There is also the situation where the green light of the COVID Committee is no longer lit on train running due to the difficulty in maintaining distance between passengers while using the train," he said.

However, there is a need to maintain the health care system or train services for those who go to work for essential duties, he added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
