Threats on EC members: PAFFREL says delaying probe will damage pride of police

Some Election Commission members' houses and vehicles have been photographed and forwarded to the person who is threatening them through WhatsApp from overseas, People's Action for Free & Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said.

In a letter sent to IGP C.D Wickremeratne, the PAFFREL Executive Director said though the police are investigating the death threats on some Election Commission members, even though almost 12 days have passed since these incidents, no one has been arrested yet.

He, however, expressed his gratitude to the IGP for the prompt action to provide protection to the Election Commission members who were under threat of death.

Hettiarachchi  said that it is clear that even though the person who is threatening is doing it from abroad, he is getting the support he needs in Sri Lanka. " Some commissioners' houses and vehicles have been photographed and forwarded to them through WhatsApp. And it seems to have happened on several occasions," he said in his letter.

The Executive Director said Sri Lanka Police has skilled crime investigators and the delay of these investigations will damage the pride of the police department.

Also, it will be a threat to the members of the Election Commission and obstacle in carrying out their work freely due to the delay in bringing criminals to justice.

He requested IGP to pay special attention to these matters and carry out the relevant investigations promptly. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
