The law should apply to former navy commander Wasantha Karannangoda if he had done anything wrong, Field Marshal and MP Sarath Fonseka said today during the debate on the second reading of the Budget.

He said the former navy commander should be penalized if he was found guilty on the charges which he was facing.

“Karannagoda should be dealt with under the law if he is had ordered the abduction and the killing of the 12 youths just to satisfy his superior,” the MP said. “We will protect war heroes but not criminals."

He said he was deprived of a ministry due to a personal grudge and added that President Maithripala Sirisena should understand that the UNP Leader should be allowed to choose his ministers when a UNP government is in office and as such there was no room for personal grudges.

The MP said he criticisms was constructive and pointed out that funds had not been allocated to the various parts of the country in a fair manner. Citing an example he said funds as much as Rs.12 to 13 billion was allocated to the Polonnaruwa District annually while areas such as Gampaha had been allocated as little as Rs.10 million. He said this was not just nor fair. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
