Blood and pathology tests needed to be carried out to determine whether the sudden drop in the platelets of a dead hotel worker, who was administered with COVID-19 vaccine was due to a complication caused by the vaccine, Assistant Judicial Medical Officer of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Galle, Samadhi Dandeniya Arachchi, who conducted the autopsy on the dead, said.
She told the Daily Mirror that the hotel worker had received the COVID-19 vaccine two weeks ago and had developed complications like fever, body aches, drop in platelets and vomiting.
“The deceased was a 40-year-old resident of Embilipitiya. He was transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital due to a drop in platelets where he was pronounced dead. He suffered a brain haemorrhage as well,” she said.
“It was also confirmed in the post mortem that there were blood clots in other organs as well. However, it is impossible to say this was due to complications caused by the vaccine. It is yet to be ascertained by a blood and pathology test and bone marrow biopsy,” Dr. Dandeniya Arachchi added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
