The Environment Ministry said that a task force would be appointed to look into the unusual algae growth in the Diyawanna Oya.

It has been confirmed that the discoloration of the water around the Diyawanna Oya in Parliament is due to Algae Bloom or algae growth.

Experts have pointed out that this algae growth is at risk of further deterioration and could even lead to a strong odor in the surrounding environment.

Accordingly, a task force would be appointed with expertise to provide a solution to this environmental problem and to submit a relevant Cabinet Memorandum, the minister said.

The relevant Cabinet Memorandum has been finalized and Environment Minister Amaraweera is scheduled to present the Cabinet Memorandum at the next Cabinet meeting.

Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe said that several factions have been identified to take action in this regard and steps are being taken to prevent the growth of this unusual algae growth.

The Secretary pointed out that such algae growth could be due to the neglect of sustainable development policies in the implementation of Sri Jayewardenepura development plans.

He said that a discussion will be held at the Ministry next Tuesday with several experts who can work in this regard.

Speaker also convened a meeting in this regard last week and he instructed Dr. Anil Jasinghe, to take immediate appropriate action to prevent the growth of these algae.
