Elections Commission (EC) Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said today that the commission has informed police to take stern action on illegal motorcycle processions reported in Puttalam.

Speaking at a news briefing, he said the Commission has yesterday received at least four complaints on incidents of illegal motorcycle processions held in the district.

“There were many complaints about illegal motorcycle processions conducted during propaganda activities in the North Western Province. We discussed the issue deeply at the Puttalam District Elections Office,” he said.

He said the Commission has told police to take stern action on these incidents.

“If you see an illegal incident, inform the police on 1933 and the Commission as well and then post the videos on Facebook. We have made a request to deploy Special Task Force (STF) in Puttalam. The STF will be deployed to all problematic areas,” he said.

Video footage and photos circulating on social media platforms showed Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Puttalam District candidate Sanath Nishantha riding an unregistered motorbike, without wearing a helmet, as part of a convoy.
