Suspect who robbed two banks arrested with over Rs. 1.3m in cash

A man who allegedly robbed two banks at Warakapola and Rambukkana had been arrested along with over Rs. 1.3 million stolen cash, the Police said.

They said the Kegalle Division Crimes officers launched an investigation into a complaint lodged with the Warakapola Police over a bank robbery in Warakapola earlier this month.

According to the complaint, an individual has robbed Rs.1,866,843 in cash and Rs. 28,500 worth jewellery from the Development Bank in Warakapola on June, 2 this year.

The suspect was arrested at Ederamulla area on Sunday.

Following the interrogation, it was revealed that the suspect had also broken into the Development Bank at Rambukka in November last year.

Police said the suspect had 13 warrants issued against him by courts island-wide.

The Police recovered Rs. 1,332,840 in cash, a hand grenade, a mobile phone, 2 NICs, a CCTV hard disk and a drill machine.

The 32-year-old suspect, a resident of Wattala would be produced in the Warakapola Magistrate’s Court. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya and Chaminda Jayalath)
