Suspect involved in Easter Sunday attack arrested after deported from UAE

The Terrorists Investigation Division (TID) arrested a 42-year old man for promoting extremism and alleged involvement in Easter Sunday attacks, after he was deported to Sri Lanka from the UAE.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspect was arrested on Sunday in Weligama area along with Rs. 2.7 million in cash and three laptops.

As per the investigations, the suspect was staying in the UAE for a longer period and he had raised funds for his Sri Lankan counterparts to promote extremism from there.

DIG Rohana said the suspect had also promoted radicalism through social media platforms.

"After the Easter Sunday attacks, CID and TID are conducting joint investigations to apprehend the perpetrators who have directly involved in the carnage. We have informed the UAE officials about the suspect's movements and they have deported the suspect to Sri Lanka on March 12," he said.

DIG Rohana said the suspect would be detained for further interrogation. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
