The suspect arrested over the death of a businessman whose body was found in a swiming pool in Thalangama recently reportedly confessed to the police that he had killed the businessman following a dispute over their relationship.

The body of the businessman Roshan Wanninayaka was found in his 3 storied building which is being constructed at Pelawatta, Thalangama.

The police on Sunday arrested the 27-year old suspect and his wife in connection with the death of the 49-year-old businessman from Wellampitiya.

According to the investigation, the suspect and the businessman are members of a gay men's dating club and the suspect maintained close relations with various people for money through the club.

After the marriage, the suspect reportedly left that practice. However, he again joined the gay club due to financial difficulties even though he is married.

The suspect had told the police that he recognized the deceased businessman in question through the gay club and went there on January 30 after the businessman had informed him to come to his house being constructed in Pelawatte.

Police investigations found that both the victim and the suspect had arrived at the house. It was reported the suspect had asked the businessman for Rs 100,000, but he refused to give it.  As a result there was an argument between the two.

Police said the suspect pushed the businessman and hit him on the head with a stick after which he fell to the ground. Then he pulled the businessman into the pool and took the victim's mobile phone and credit cards and returned to his wife's house in Kolonnawa in the victim's car.

Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said both the suspect and his wife were travelling to Katunayake in the businessman's car.

He said they had obtained two air tickets to go to Indonesia with the credit card of the businessman, and had not been able to go abroad due to a problem in obtaining visas.

Meanwhile, the post moterm examination into the death of the businessman was conducted and it was found that the death was a result of blunt force blows to the head.

The spokesman said since the body of the businessman was not recognized by their relatives, a DNA test will be conducted.

The suspect couple was produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate Court and ordered to be detained 48 hours for further questioning.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
