The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today arrested a 36-year-old suspect from Andiambalama over abusing a girl child, an incident which was video recorded and went viral on social media.
Police said the suspect is a relative of the victim. The CID launched the investigation after the child abuse video circulated on media.
Police said the CID Digital Forensic Unit revealed the information on the suspect following a thorough investigation.
However, the suspect had been in hiding and he was arrested in Andiambalama after analysing his telephone records.
Investigations revealed that the child had been abused several occasions inside and outside her house.
The child has been produced before a Judicial Medical Officer and the suspect is to be produced in the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court tomorrow. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
